After weeks, if not months of rumours and false predictions, the announcement was finally made. NVIDIA finally revealed the much-awaited Pascal-based NVIDIA GeForce 1080.
What the rumours got correct was the new name of the card. What they missed was the launch date, which NVIDIA kept close to its hearts until CEO Jen-Hsun Huang made the announcement at a specially-gathered press event in Austin on Friday evening (Saturday morning Singapore time).
According to Huang, NVIDIA spent billions in research and development of Pascal and the new GPU.
At his opening keynote address at GTC in San Jose, Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA made a slew of announcements, including the world’s first deep learning supercomputer to meet the unlimited computing demands of artificial intelligence (AI).
As the first system designed specifically for deep learning, the NVIDIA DGX-1 comes fully integrated with hardware, deep learning software and development tools for quick, easy deployment. It is a turnkey system that contains a new generation of GPU accelerators, delivering the equivalent throughput of 250 x86 servers.
The DGX-1 deep learning system enables researchers and data scientists to easily harness the power of GPU-accelerated computing to create a new class of intelligent machines that learn, see and perceive the world as humans do. It delivers unprecedented levels of computing power to drive next-generation AI applications, allowing researchers to dramatically reduce the time to train larger, more sophisticated deep neural networks.
Oprah Winfrey has done it. So has Ellen Degeneres. Jen-Hsun Huang got into the act too by giving all GTC 2014 participants an NVIDIA Shield. At the end of his keynote address on March 25, the NVIDIA CEO made the announcement to gasps and shrieks of joy from the audience. Those who were unable to be at the event can get the handheld Android device for US$199 for a limited period.
Those futuristic movies showing self-driving cars have come to reality with the likes of the Audi A7. AT GTC 2014, the car glided across the stage as Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, delivered his keynote address and drove home his point about the applications of NVIDIA processors. The Audi A7 is powered by a small computer featuring an NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip.
NVIDIA has reported revenue for Q1 of fiscal 2014, ended April 28, 2013, of US$954.7 million, down 13.7 percent from US$1.11 billion in Q4 of fiscal 2013.
GAAP earnings per diluted share were US$0.13, down 53.6 percent from US$0.28 in the prior quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were US$0.18, down 48.6 percent from US$0.35 in the prior quarter.
As previously announced, NVIDIA plans to return in excess of $1 billion this fiscal year to shareholders in the form of share repurchases and quarterly dividend payments. During Q1, NVIDIA returned US$146.3 million to shareholders by repurchasing US$100 million of shares, and paying US$46.3 million of dividends, or US$0.075 per share.

NVIDIA GRID VCA provides enormous flexibility to small and medium-size businesses with limited IT infrastructures. Their employees can, through the simple click of an icon, create a virtual machine called a workspace. These workspaces – which are, effectively, dedicated, high-performance GPU-based systems – can be added, deleted or reallocated as needed.

On Wednesday, March 20, Erez Lieberman Aiden (right), a pioneering genomics researcher, will discuss his work sequencing the human genome in 3D, which allows scientists to gain deep insights into gene behavior and fundamental biological processes of life. NVIDIA has reported revenue for fiscal 2013 ended January 27, 2013, of a record $4.28 billion, up 7.1 percent from $4.00 billion in fiscal 2012.
GAAP earnings per share for the year were $0.90 per diluted share, a decrease of 4.3 percent from $0.94 in fiscal 2012. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $1.17, down 1.7 percent from $1.19 in fiscal 2012. During the quarter, NVIDIA repurchased $100.0 million of stock and paid a dividend of $0.075 per share, equivalent to $46.9 million.
