“Sorry, something went wrong. Try again in a few seconds.” and “There was a glitch. Try again in a few seconds.” are not messages most Google Home and Home mini users are familiar with, but these messages kept repeating themselves most of yesterday.
Google Home and its smaller sibling plus Chromecast were hit by an outage that had the world of Google users all stirred up.
According to downdetector.com, the problem began at around 4am on June 26 (Singapore time).
Though many of the reports came in from the United States, the impact was felt in many places around the world. The fact that the US had the most reports is unsurprising as Google products are not widely available worldwide. In Singapore, the Google online store only started selling the products from April.
During the outage, Google Home devices would not respond to commands and Chromecast could not be detected — even though wifi connections were fine.
Thinking that the problem was local, users tried different ways to get their devices working, including powering off and on and restoring to factory setting.
Thankfully, the connections have been restored and it’s fine to say, “OK Google” again without getting those annoying messages.
As of press time, there’s no official statement from Google on the cause of the problem.
