AMD discusses Xilinx takeover

AMD is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Xilinx for US$30 billion, according to Bloomberg. And it seems that the deal could be sealed as early as next week.

If it comes to pass, the takeover will better position AMD in its battle against Intel and NVIDIA for supremacy in the datacentre arena. It will also give the company access to programmable chips for the telecommunications narket.

Rival NVIDIA already has Mellanox in its bag and is awaiting approval to complete its Arm acquisition.

AMD is making strides in closing the gap with a new generation of CPUs announced early today and is expected to launch of a new series of GPUs in the coming days to counter NVIDIA’s recently introduced GeForce RTX 30 Series.
