Ouster intros Rev8 OS family of native colour lidars

Ouster has launched its Rev8 OS lidar family with native colour sensing and doubling the range and resolution of its prior generation.

Designed for functional safety, cybersecurity and large-scale production, the new family improves how vehicles detect and interpret their surroundings.

For vehicles, the biggest significance is perception quality: colour-aware lidar could help autonomous systems better recognise road signs, brake lights, lane markings, and other context that pure geometry alone can miss.

Higher range and resolution also give vehicle systems more time and detail to react, which can support safer automated driving in complex traffic.

Rev8 is built for affordability, reliability and comes with a 10-year production life. Shipping this quarter, the sensors are intended for mass-market deployments, turning lidar from a premium feature into a scalable automotive component.

“With the L4 Ouster Silicon, we are delivering on the promise of our digital architecture to deliver exponential improvements in performance, doubling our core specs and simultaneously introducing the world’s first native colour lidar to give machines 3D human-like sight for the next era of Physical AI. Rev8 is the foundational technology that will allow customers to move from prototype to commercial production at scale, providing the reliability and affordability required to enable real-world autonomy across industries,” said Angus Pacala, CEO of Ouster.
