AMD and South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) have teamed up to advance Korea’s AI semiconductor and computing ecosystem, including work on national AI infrastructure, software development, advanced research, talent development, and open-source AI models.
The collaboration entails exploring a computing environment that combines AMD CPUs and GPUs with Korean-developed neural processing units, and plans to establish an AI centre of excellence in Korea.
“Korea is building the foundations to become a global leader in the AI era, drawing on our strengths in semiconductors, advanced research and technology innovation,” said Kyunghoon Bae (top left), Minister of Science and ICT and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea. “Our strategic partnership with AMD will help expand access to advanced computing, strengthen the development of world-class AI talent and foster an open ecosystem in which Korean companies, universities and researchers can innovate.”
According to AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su (top right), Korea is a core strategic market for AMD, which has world-class competitiveness in semiconductors, AI, advanced research, and physical AI.
“AMD will actively support the Republic of Korea in building an open, heterogeneous AI infrastructure by combining high-performance computing technologies, open software capabilities, and global ecosystem partnerships in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and ICT,” she added.
The timing is notable because NVIDIA and Kaist just launched a joint AI research lab in Seoul, making Korea an increasingly important battleground for AI partnerships.
