LG to develop NVIDIA-powered humanoid robot

LG is developing a next-generation bi-pedal humanoid robot based on NVIDIA’s Isaac GR00T foundation model.

Expected to be introduced in Q1 of 2027, the project follows an agreement by both companies across robotics, AI factories and future mobility.

“As our discussions have moved fast, our tasks and goals in AI factory and physical AI have become clear. We will accelerate the spread of AI by building industry-leading references,” said Kwang Mo Koo (top right), Chairman and CEO of LG.

The humanoid will use NVIDIA Jetson Thor for onboard computing, reasoning and control.

LG also plans to build the robot with NVIDIA Isaac GR00T and NVIDIA Halos for Robotics.

The project will bring together capabilities from across LG, including actuators from LG Electronics, sensors from LG Innotek and batteries from LG Energy Solution.

Robots move into production

Separately, LG plans to deploy its CLOiD wheel-based robot at an LG Electronics washing-machine manufacturing line in Tennessee by the end of 2026. It will use the site to validate the robot in a live production environment and refine its performance and utility.

The resulting technology could eventually be deployed across global production facilities, homes and commercial spaces.

Also included in the collaboration is the development of a robot data factory using LG CNS PhysicalWorks. The platform will support continuous data collection, synthetic-data generation, model training, and verification for robotics.

Data and manufacturing site experience from the initiative will support LG’s in-house Robot Foundation Model, which remains under development. LG will use Isaac GR00T while continuing to advance its own AI model capabilities.

The companies will establish a joint task force of technical and business experts to coordinate research and development, site validation and commercialisation.

AI factory and mobility plans

A reference AI factory powered by NVIDIA Vera Rubin is set to be constructed in the first half of 2027. LG intends to apply insights from this project to build an 80-megawatt AI factory in Cheonan, South Korea, by the first half of 2028.

The facility will primarily support the development of physical AI and robot foundation models. Leveraging NVIDIA’s DSX AI factory architecture, LG also plans to create all-in-one “One LG” AI factory solutions to serve global technology firms.

In the automotive sector, LG will build a high-performance computing platform for next-generation AI-defined vehicles, built on NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion. This platform will merge NVIDIA’s autonomous driving expertise with LG’s strengths in in-vehicle infotainment and automotive software.

Through this strategy, LG aims to expand its automotive business beyond infotainment into autonomous driving systems and in-cabin AI services.
