Dell’s new rugged laptops bring AI to the field

Dell Technologies has introduced two new rugged laptops for those who work in harsh and remote environments, including utility networks, public safety operations, transportation, and oil and gas sites.

The Dell Pro Rugged 13 Extreme and Dell Pro Rugged 14 are aimed at enterprises that need computers to function well in extreme weather, wet conditions and demanding field operations. Both are MIL-STD-810H certified and rated to operate across temperatures ranging from -29°C to 62°C.

They support gloved and water-resistant multi-touch input that let workers use them while wearing personal protective equipment or working in wet conditions. Features include hot-swappable batteries, GPS, optional private 5G, and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.

“Field workers keep critical operations running no matter the conditions, and their technology needs to do the same,” said Charlie Walker, Head of Product for Dell Pro Precision and Dell Pro Rugged. “Our new Dell Pro Rugged laptops deliver the performance, durability and connectivity that keep workers productive when it matters most, with the standardisation and security IT teams need for small to large-scale deployments.”

Built for extremes

The 13-inch Dell Pro Rugged 13 Extreme comes with an IP66 rating that protects it against dust and water ingress. It has been drop-tested from 1.8 metres, making it suitable for work sites where equipment may be exposed to falls, rain, dust, and debris.

Featuring a 13.3-inch full HD display with brightness of up to 1,400 nits, it has great readability under direct sunlight. It can be configured with up to 64GB of LPDDR5X memory and Intel Arc integrated graphics for visualisation and data-heavy workloads.

A removable SSD and self-encrypting drive options gives enterprises greater control over data security and compliance, particularly in sensitive government, infrastructure and industrial deployments.

The Dell Pro Rugged 14 is a semi-rugged model for users who need more performance in a relatively portable form factor. Weighing about 2.13kg, it offers close to one-metre drop protection and carries an IP53 rating against dust, dirt and water exposure.

Included is an NVIDIA RTX PRO 500 Blackwell Generation Laptop GPU that could support field-based visualisation, data analysis and AI workloads. Its 14-inch 16:10 full HD display reaches up to 1,100 nits and provides additional vertical space for documents, dashboards and operational applications.

The model also features LPCAMM2 memory of up to 64GB, enabling IT teams to upgrade or replace memory modules more easily. A redesigned vehicle dock with quad passthrough lets workers operate primarily from vehicles and need reliable access to external displays, networks and peripherals.

Available from early October,, both models include Dell’s Rugged Control Center, which provides access to settings such as GPS configuration, hardware shortcuts and device customisation. The laptops can also be used for centralised fleet management, with cloud-based deployment and security tools, Dell ProSupport and predictive maintenance capabilities.

Security features include TPM 2.0, contacted and contactless smart card readers, fingerprint readers and IR cameras supporting Windows Hello facial recognition. Dell SafeID with ControlVault and BIOS-level protections are supplemented by what Dell describes as quantum-resistant protections.
