Akamai inks first renewable energy agreement in APAC

Apple is powered by 32 megawatts of solar panels on more than 800 rooftops in Singapore.

Akamai has signed a virtual power purchase agreement with EDP APAC in Singapore to offtake electricity from rooftop solar systems across 27 locations.

The portfolio can generate up to 17,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to a 13 megawatt-peak system. It is expected to abate an estimated 5,850 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.

“As Akamai expands its distributed cloud infrastructure across Asia-Pacific, we want renewable energy procurement to grow alongside it. Singapore is an important place to begin because it demonstrates how rooftop solar can contribute to renewable energy generation even in a highly urbanised country,” said Mike Mattera, Director of Corporate Sustainability at Akamai.

According to Filipa Ricciardi, Executive Director of EDP APAC, the agreement demonstrates the potential of Singapore’s solar market to support corporate renewable energy demand through locally generated clean electricity.

The deal marks Akamai’s first power purchase agreement in Asia-Pacific and builds on its renewable energy projects in the United States and Europe. Akamai targets 100 percent renewable energy and net-zero emissions by 2030.

In Singapore, the agreement supports the Green Plan 2030’s push to expand solar deployment by using rooftop space in a land-constrained market.
