The repercussion of WhatsApp’s new terms and conditions are massive with many users flocking to alternatives such as Signal and Telegram over the past few days.
Signal is reaching one million daily downloads while Telegram noted that it has added more than 25 million users from around the world in the past 72 hours alone.
Even though the numbers pale in comparison to WhatsApp’s reported two billion monthly active users, the migration could escalate in the run up to the February 8, 2021 deadline.
This spells crisis mode for WhatsApp with Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram tweeting that “There is a lot of misinformation about the WhatsApp ToS right now.”
“The policy update does not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family in any way. The changes are related to messaging a business on WhatsApp, which is optional,” he added.

But the “optional” portion doesn’t quite add up because the WhatsApp ultimatum was to accept the new terms and conditions by February 8, 2021 or stop using the app.
“After this date, you’ll need to accept these updates to continue using WhatsApp,” read the alert.
