US blacklists 7 China supercomputing organisations

Under the Biden Administraion, the US Department of Commerce is continuing on its trend of blacklisting China companies deemed to be linked to or supporting China’s military.

The latest strike involves seven supercomputing — Shanghai High-Performance Integrated Circuit Design Center, Sunway Microelectronics, Tianjin Phytium Information Technology, and the National Supercomputing Centers in Jinan, Shenzhen, Wuxi, and Zhengzhou.

The US DOC claims that these entities are involved in “building supercomputers used by China’s military actors, its destabilising military modernisation efforts, and/or weapons of mass destruction programmes.”

Being named on the infamous Entity List prohibits the organisations from purchasing much needed parts and components from US companies without government approval.

Taking immediate effect, the restrictions do not apply to goods that are already en route.
