Perplexity avails local AI agent on Windows PCs

Perplexity has made its Portable Computer local AI agent available on compatible Windows PCs powered by NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs. The move follows the launch last month of the software on NVIDIA DGX Spark systems.

With this release, users can run agentic AI workflows locally and keep sensitive information on the device while using NVIDIA GPU acceleration to analyse files, connect information and complete recurring tasks.

Portable Computer is integrated into the Perplexity app for Windows and is available for systems with at least 24GB of video memory.

Designed to plan and execute multi-step tasks using local models, it also lets users send more demanding work to cloud models, with the application asking for permission before information leaves the device.

Locally completed work does not consume Perplexity Computer credits. The approach empowers enterprises and professionals to use AI agents with confidential documents, credentials and business data without automatically transferring those assets to a cloud service.

The application supports connectors for GitHub, Gmail, Google Drive, Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Slack, and Word, letting the agent work across existing productivity and collaboration tools.

Perplexity has packaged a local model, such as Qwen 3.8 27B, that has been post-trained to work with Perplexity Computer and optimised for NVIDIA RTX GPUs.

This means users do not need to identify a suitable model or configure the software stack typically associated with running local AI. The agent can use local inference for tasks that can be completed on the PC, while orchestrating more advanced research and reasoning through cloud models when authorised.

First on NVIDIA DGX Spark

Perplexity first introduced Portable Computer for NVIDIA DGX Spark personal AI systems in August. The initial DGX Spark release included one-click local inference and support for the post-trained Qwen 3.8 27B model.

The company is developing a fine-tuned Nemotron 3.5 Lightning variant for faster responses, with Windows and DGX Station support in the pipeline.

The Windows launch broadens the addressable hardware base from NVIDIA’s compact AI system to higher-end consumer and professional PCs. It also reflects growing interest in hybrid AI architectures that combine local processing for privacy and predictable usage with cloud resources for more complex workloads.

Portable Computer is available through the Perplexity app for compatible NVIDIA RTX and RTX PRO Windows PCs.
