Huawei and Quantum agree broad patent deal

Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a multi-year, broad patent license agreement that cross-licenses portfolios across 5G, compute, AI and networking. This includes Qualcomm’s purchase of certain Huawei US patents.

This is Huawei’s first patent-licensing agreement with Qualcomm covering 5G, and the first under which Huawei licenses and assigns patents in compute, AI and networking to the US chip designer.

“This agreement not only demonstrates the value of Huawei’s innovations, but also recognizes Qualcomm’s foundational contributions to modern communication technologies,” said Alan Fan, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Huawei.

With this deal signed, Huawei expects contract value from its patent licensing agreements so far to exceed US$6.9 billion.

According to John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, the agreement reaffirms industry recognition of Qualcomm’s 5G technology leadership and the success of Qualcomm’s 5G SEP licensing program. It reflects Qualcomm’s recognition of Huawei’s continued innovation and intellectual property in 5G and other technology fields.

The transaction will close following receipt of the necessary regulatory approvals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
