Telegram has gained more than 100 new users in January, the bulk of whom were probably former WhatsApp users who were peeved by new terms and privacy policy.
And Telegram has just added an incentive to those who are holding back from moving because of existing contents on WhatsApp. It now allows users to import their entire chat history – including videos and documents – from WhatsApp and other messaging platforms such as KakaoTalk and Line.
Plus, this import applies to both individual and groups chats and can be done for both Android and iOS.
Moving from iOS
Open the Contact Info or Group Info page in WhatsApp, tap Export Chat, then choose Telegram in the Share menu.
You can also export chats directly from the chat list. Swipe left on a chat, then choose ‘…’ > Export Chat.
Moving from Android
Open a WhatsApp chat, tap ⋮ > More > Export Chat, then choose Telegram in the Share menu:
Messages will be imported into the current day but will also include their original timestamps. All members of the chat on Telegram will see the messages.
The migration will not balloon storage space usage as Telegram stores messages, photos and videos online.
