Singtel adds Starlink connectivity for maritime industry

Singtel has augmented its maritime connectivity solutions with Starlink, the world’s first and largest low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband service.

The move enhances the Singapore telco’s maritime digital offerings and enables ship owners and operators to access advanced technologies and cloud-based solutions. It will help the maritime industry improve safety, operational efficiencies and crew well-being, as well as reduce costs and environmental impact.

Singtel will integrate Starlink’s satellites with its iSHIP portfolio, which is a comprehensive suite of award-winning, digital smart solutions for vessels, including Paragon, an all-in-one orchestration platform for 5G edge computing and cloud services.

The platform will intelligently and automatically switch between satellite communication services, ensuring seamless and high-quality network coverage for ships across long distances, remote locations and harsh conditions. It will also allow ships to use edge computing, host mission critical applications either on-board or at shore, and free up bandwidth and improve reliability.

Starlink’s satellites provide high-speed, low-latency Internet connectivity, using LEO technology that minimizes the number of hops and switches for data transmission. This enables ship operators to analyse data in real-time, and leverage artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, and other emerging technologies to optimise their operations, reduce fuel consumption and operational maintenance, and enhance their innovation and competitiveness.

With more than 5,000 satellites, Starlink can provide global maritime coverage for vessels of all sizes, delivering up to 220 Mbps download speed – easily capable of supporting fleet management, remote monitoring, and navigation.

“The maritime industry is a complex, interconnected environment involving large volumes of data being transmitted between thousands of terminals, ships, and ports across the world. The addition of Starlink to our existing suite of satellite communications solutions, orchestrated by our patented Paragon platform, is part of our multi-orbit strategy to increase the resilience of satellite connectivity in the industry and to enable the rapid adoption of digital technologies and solutions,” said Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer of Digital InfraCo at Singtel.
