Equinix sets up IBX data centres in Johor and KL

Equinix has opened two International Business Exchange (IBX) data centres in Johor (JH1) and Kuala Lumpur (KL1) to serve both domestic and regional needs.

JH1 is a two-storey building located at Nusajaya Tech Park (NTP) in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Just 15 kilometres from Singapore, this location is ideal for businesses operating across both countries. With an initial investment of US$40 million, JH1 offers 500 cabinets and 1,800 square metres of co-location space, providing a significant boost to Malaysia’s digital infrastructure.

The KL1 data centre is situated in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur, a key hub within Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor. Once fully built, KL1 will provide a total of 900 cabinets and a co-location space of 2,630 square metres.

With sustainability being a core focus for Equinix, both data centres are powered by 100 percent renewable energy sources. They will adhere to the A1A energy efficiency standards set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This not only contributes to the overall efficiency of the facilities but also empowers customers to minimise their environmental impact by reducing Scope 3 carbon emissions.

Equinix will provide robust interconnection and digital services at both JH1 and KL1. This includes Equinix Internet Access, Equinix Fabric, Equinix Fabric Cloud Router, and Equinix Internet Exchange (IX), all scheduled for launch in phases throughout 2024. These services offer businesses seamless connectivity, scalability, optimised performance, and flexibility.

These carrier-neutral facilities offer Malaysia-based businesses access to a global ecosystem of more than 10,000 enterprises, networks and cloud service providers.

“We are dedicated to delivering exceptional digital infrastructure solutions that empower businesses to thrive in this dynamic landscape, fuelling innovation, economic growth and societal advancement,” said Jeremy Deutsch, President, Asia-Pacific of Equinix.

Equinix’s entry in Malaysia also aligns with the Malaysian government’s MyDIGITAL initiative that strives to outline a strategy for the nation to expedite the development of digital products and services.

“Equinix’s decision to expand its presence here reflects its continued confidence in Malaysia’s industrial landscape, which is undergoing key transformative initiatives as outlined in the New Industrial Masterplan (NIMP) 2030. These data centres will provide businesses, particularly domestic SMEs, with seamless connectivity and access to a vast global network, while driving innovation across diverse sectors in Malaysia. Most importantly, Equinix’s investment will pave the way for the creation of high-value job opportunities and propel economic growth, empowering our people and businesses to excel in the digital age,” said YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) of Malaysia.
