Singapore launches quantum strategy

Singapore has launched National Quantum Strategy (NQS) to accelerate efforts in quantum research and development (R&D).

The strategy involves strengthening scientific excellence in high-impact quantum research areas such as quantum communications, quantum processors, and quantum sensing. The Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) will be elevated to a flagship national R&D centre for quantum technologies.

“Quantum technology holds promise as the next wave. Quantum communications, quantum sensing and quantum computing all have the potential to unlock new value,” said Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, at the opening of ATxSummit.

Organised by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the apex event of ATxSG is held at Capella Singapore from May 30 and 31. It comprises an invitation-only plenary conference, covering topics such as artificial intelligence, governance and safety, quantum computing, sustainability and compute.

In his speech, Heng also announced a new National Quantum Sensor Programme for developing quantum sensing applications, and a National Quantum Processor Initiative to build capabilities in quantum processor design and fabrication.

Under NQS, Singapore aims to develop a quantum-ready workforce through initiatives such as the National Quantum Scholarship Scheme to groom 200 PhD and Masters graduates over five years.

The nation will also nurture a vibrant quantum industry by catalysing industry collaboration and supporting local enterprises through programmes such as the National Quantum Computing Hub.

NQS aims to establish an integrated quantum ecosystem in Singapore by bringing together scientific excellence, engineering capabilities, talent development, and innovative enterprises.

Heng welcomes like-minded partners from the region and beyond to join Singapore, and collectively harness the next bound of technology for good.
