Singapore rolls out Smart Nation 2.0 initiative

Singapore has launched the Smart Nation 2.0 initiative to take the nation’s digital transformation to the next level.

Building on the success of the Smart Nation vision introduced in 2014, this refreshed iteration seeks to position Singapore as a global leader in the digital era.

“We have done well as a Smart Nation. But we must never think that we have arrived. Technology is advancing rapidly, and our operating environment is ever changing. So we have to keep pace, stay abreast of the latest developments, and continually strive to do better,” said Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of Singapore.

Singapore has come a long way since the introduction of the National Computerisation Programme in the 1980s, followed by the IT2000 masterplan in the 1990s.

Smart Nation 2.0 focuses on three critical pillars: digital government, digital economy and digital society. They are designed to create a seamless digital ecosystem that benefits citizens, businesses and the government.

Under digital government, the vision is to enhance public service delivery through advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics for more efficient and personalised government services for citizens.

Smart Nation 2.0 will focus on nurturing a vibrant digital economy by supporting local businesses on their digital transformation journeys and attracting global tech talent and companies to Singapore.

To build a digital society, the initiative emphasises digital inclusion and literacy to ensure that all Singaporeans can participate in and benefit from the digital revolution.

The government is investing heavily in cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure, such as expanding 5G coverage to enable faster and more reliable connectivity; developing quantum computing capabilities to solve complex problems; and enhancing cybersecurity measures to protect digital assets and privacy.

Collaborative approach

Smart Nation 2.0 adopts a whole-of-nation approach involving collaboration between the government, private sector and citizens. This inclusive strategy aims to foster innovation and ensure that the benefits of digital transformation are widely shared.

“Ultimately, Smart Nation is a call to all Singaporeans. Let us work together to build a better home for all – a Singapore brimming with exciting opportunities, where we can support one another in realising our dreams, and where each of us can become the best version of ourselves,” said PM Wong.

Smart Nation 2.0 should strengthen Singapore’s position as a global tech hub that is attractive for international investments and partnerships. By showcasing successful digital initiatives and solutions, Singapore can also inspire other nations and contribute to global digital development.
