OpenAI to establish Singapore base

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced at Tech Week Singapore that it plans to open an office in Singapore later this year.

The new Singapore office will serve as its Asia-Pacific hub, supporting customers and partners throughout the region.

The company has already begun building a team in Singapore, with plans to hire before 2025 up to 10 employees in sales, security and solutions engineering.

According to Sam Altman (top) of OpenAI, Singapore has emerged as a leader in artificial intelligence. He looks forward to partnering with the government and the local AI ecosystem.

As part of its expansion, OpenAI has announced several key partnerships and initiatives. It is collaborating with AI Singapore to provide up to US$1 million to help develop resources, including open datasets, to ensure AI models are better suited to Southeast Asia’s diverse languages and cultures.

With a local presence, the company will be able to work closer with government agencies such as the Economic Development Board.

OpenAI will also host its first Developer Day in Singapore on November 21, for the region’s developer and startup communities.

Oliver Jay has been appointed as OpenAI’s Managing Director for international markets and will be based in Singapore. He will oversee international operations and global expansion efforts.

Singapore will be the second office to open in Asia, following the first in Tokyo, Japan in April 2024.
