Nokia and Cellcard bring 10Gbps speeds to homes in Cambodia

Nokia and Cellcard are upgrading Cambodia’s residential fibre broadband network to transform the online experience for residents and bring multi-gigabit internet speeds to homes and businesses.

Cellcard will deploy Nokia’s XGS-PON technology to enable internet speeds of up to 10Gbps for customers. This upgrade marks a substantial improvement from the current GPON network.

Cambodia has been making steady progress in expanding its digital infrastructure in recent years. As of 2024, the country boasted 34,491 km of mainland fibre optic cables and two submarine cables spanning 640 km in Cambodian waters.

However, the demand for faster and more reliable internet has grown significantly, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a dramatic increase in the need for robust online services.

With the Nokia-Cellcard collaboration, Cambodian residents can enjoy up to 10Gbps internet speeds for seamless streaming, gaming and browsing experiences.

The new network is designed to evolve to 25G PON to keep Cambodia ahead of growing capacity demands. High-speed, low-latency connections will enable applications such as augmented reality and virtual reality. Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller will enhance the reliability and flexibility of Cellcard’s fibre network.

“The new network will enable our users to enjoy high-bandwidth-consuming applications like gaming while enhancing network efficiency through automation,” said Asitha De Costa, ICT Division CIO of Cellcard.

The upgrade is aligned with Cambodia’s broader digital transformation goals, which include achieving universal internet and mobile service coverage by 2027.
