Indonesia sets up AI Centre of Excellence

Indonesia has established its AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) as part of its commitment to build a sovereign, secure and inclusive AI ecosystem tailored to the country’s unique needs and values.

Helmed by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) in partnership with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Cisco and NVIDIA, the centre is a strategic component of Indonesia’s Golden 2045 Vision which seeks to harness digital technologies to drive productivity, innovation and economic growth across all sectors of society.

The CoE will include an advanced AI factory equipped with comprehensive NVIDIA technologies, such as Blackwell GPUs, reference architectures from NVIDIA Cloud Partners and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software.

Complementing this infrastructure is a sophisticated security platform developed by Cisco. Known as the Sovereign Security Operations Center Cloud Platform, Cisco’s solution integrates AI-driven threat detection, localised data management, and managed security services to safeguard the AI factory’s operations.

The robust foundation ensures that AI-powered services can reach every corner of the archipelago, from bustling urban centres to remote rural communities.

“We want Indonesia to be more than just a technology market — we want it to be a home for innovation and the creation of AI technologies that are relevant to the nation’s needs,” said Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

Some 28 independent software vendors and startups are utilising the CoE’s NVIDIA-powered infrastructure to develop solutions in higher education, food security, smart cities, and healthcare.

Initiatives such as AI agents for preventative health outreach and chatbots for citizen services, all delivered in Bahasa Indonesia, are making a tangible impact.

The CoE’s inclusive approach ensures that AI benefits are accessible to all segments of society, empowering not only businesses and government but also everyday citizens.

“With the support of global partners, we’re accelerating Indonesia’s path to economic growth by ensuring Indonesians are not just users of AI, but creators and innovators. This initiative will translate into a commitment to develop talent, build national capabilities and shape a future where Indonesia leads in AI — not follows. It is reinforcing our larger purpose to empower Indonesia,” said Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.
