Nokia and EBB partner in Malaysian AI data centre upgrade

Nokia and Extreme Broadband (EBB), alongside its subsidiary Open DC, have linked up to upgrade Malaysia’s rapidly expanding AI-powered data centres.

The move aims to bolster national security and performance in line with the country’s National Cloud Computing Policy and digital transformation goals.

Under the collaboration, Nokia’s Data Center Gateway, Data Center Fabric and quantum-safe network solutions will be deployed for six major data centres, including locations in Cyberjaya, Johor Bahru, Penang, and Kedah to enhance network reliability and resilience for enterprise clients in sectors such as banking and finance.

EBB will use Nokia’s IP network solution to interconnect six critical data centres for secure and high-performance connectivity tailored to the stringent requirements of enterprises and financial institutions.

The agreement also covers joint go-to-market initiatives, testing and validation of event-driven automation tools, and advanced DDoS security measures to safeguard data centre tenants.

“This collaboration underscores our commitment to pioneering technologies that deliver exceptional value to our customers and contribute to Malaysia’s economic growth under the MyDigital policy. Nokia’s solutions will enhance our security, scalability and sustainability, enabling us to build connectivity hubs that support AI-driven innovation and create new revenue opportunities for enterprises,” said Wong Weng Yew, Managing Director of Open DC.

“Our field-proven IP solutions empower data centre operators to achieve unmatched reliability and scalability while efficiently meeting the evolving demands. The deployment will enable Open DC to leverage our data centre switching, automation and quantum-safe networking technologies to provide a crucial business edge to their customers,” said Kent Wong, Vice President and Head of IP Networks for Asia Pacific at Nokia.

Malaysia: Key regional data centre hub

Malaysia is a key regional hub for the data centre industry, drawing significant investment and innovation as demand for cloud services, AI workloads and digital infrastructure accelerates.

Its MyDigital policy prioritises secure, scalable and sustainable data ecosystem development, with emphasis on the financial sector and enterprise-grade connectivity.

Recent commitments by global tech giants and service providers have positioned Malaysia to serve not only domestic users but also regional markets, with Cyberjaya and Penang hosting some of Southeast Asia’s most sophisticated facilities.
