Equinix opens US$69m AI-ready data centre in Chennai

Equinix has opened its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Chennai, India.

Located in Siruseri, Tamil Nadu, the CN1 facility sits on nearly six acres of land and will be interconnected with Equinix’s Mumbai campus, which includes three IBX data centres.

The strategic development supports local and global businesses by offering direct access to India’s rapidly growing digital economy for faster cloud adoption and reduced latency across the region.

Chennai is emerging as a pivotal hub for innovation, research, and AI investment in India, and the launch of CN1 is a crucial step in strengthening the digital infrastructure required for this technological evolution.

With an initial investment of US$69 million, the facility will provide 800 cabinets in its first phase and plans to expand to 4,250 cabinets eventually.

Designed for 99.999% uptime reliability, CN1 features a comprehensive suite of Equinix interconnection services, including Equinix Fabric, which facilitates hybrid multicloud connectivity.

Additionally, the data centre supports advanced liquid cooling technology to handle the high-density and compute-intensive workloads critical for AI and other transformative technologies.

“This milestone highlights our commitment to empowering India’s position as a global technology hub while ensuring sustainability and innovation remain at the core of our operations. With CN1’s cutting-edge capabilities, we look forward to enabling businesses in Chennai and across India to leverage future-ready, scalable and digital infrastructure that supports sustainability to expand their business in Tamil Nadu and globally,” said Manoj Paul, Managing Director of India at Equinix.
