NTT Data, Sumitomo and JA Mitsui Leasing have formed Intra-Asia Marine Networks (I-AM NW) to build and operate the Intra-Asia Marine Cable (I-AM Cable).
This 8,100km cable will connect Japan landing points in Chiba, Mie and Fukuoka to Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea, with links to the Philippines and Taiwan. With a 320Tbps capacity, it will leverage advanced wavelength selective switch (WSS) and space division multiplexing (SDM) technologies.
The US$1 billion project enhances Asia’s digital infrastructure for AI and data transfers, which rely on submarine cables for 99 percent of international traffic, while boosting Japan’s role as a resilient data hub.
“The launch of I-AM NW marks a significant step in strengthening Asia’s digital infrastructure. This project reflects our commitment to delivering reliable, flexible connectivity solutions that empower businesses and drive digital transformation across the Asia-Pacific region,” said Yoshio Sato, CEO of I-AM NW.
