NVIDIA rockets AI into orbit with space computing platforms

NVIDIA is venturing into new frontiers withe the unveiling of its Space Computing initiative that delivers data-centre-grade AI performance to satellites and orbital environments.

Announced at GTC, the platforms are optimised for size, weight and power constraints in space.

Space computing refers to deploying high-performance AI and data processing directly in orbit, enabling real-time analysis of satellite data without relying on Earth-based downlinks. Its an emerging field that addresses the explosion of data from satellite constellations used for Earth observation, geospatial intelligence, and deep-space missions, where traditional ground systems face bandwidth and latency limits.

Orbital data centres, powered by constant solar energy and natural cooling, promise scalable AI infrastructure amid terrestrial constraints such as energy shortages and land scarcity. Startups like Starcloud have already demonstrated in-orbit AI model training using NVIDIA GPUs.

NVIDIA is providing accelerated computing tailored for space, building on its market leadership in AI GPUs for data centres and edge devices. Key offerings include the Space-1 Vera Rubin Module — offering 25x the AI inferencing power of the H100 GPU — for orbital data centres and autonomous operations; IGX Thor for mission-critical edge AI; and Jetson Orin for compact onboard processing.

“Space computing, the final frontier, has arrived. As we deploy satellite constellations and explore deeper into space, intelligence must live wherever data is generated,” said Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

“AI processing across space and ground systems enables real-time sensing, decision-making and autonomy, transforming orbital data centers into instruments of discovery and spacecraft into self-navigating systems.,” he added.

Companies such as Kepler Communications use Jetson Orin for smart satellite networks, while Planet integrates NVIDIA for near-real-time Earth insights via CorrDiff models. Platforms like IGX Thor and Jetson Orin are available now, with Space-1 Vera Rubin Module coming later.
