Microsoft makes US$5.5b AI push in Singapore

Microsoft has made a S$7.4 billion (US$5.5 billion) commitment to Singapore’s digital future that pairs major cloud and AI infrastructure expansion with a nationwide push to equip every tertiary student, educator and non-profit leader with AI tools and training.

Announced at Asia Tech x Inspire, the initiative reinforces the company’s belief in Singapore’s role as a global AI hub and aligns closely with the country’s National AI Strategy 2.0.

It will provide 12 months of free Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot to all tertiary students in Singapore, giving more than 200,000 young people access to enterprise-grade generative AI across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

“Our ongoing investment in cloud and AI infrastructure reflects Microsoft’s long-term confidence in Singapore as a global digital leader. Together, we’re focused on helping people and organisations use AI by strengthening skills, increasing cybersecurity and resilience, and advancing trusted governance so technology delivers real benefits for Singaporeans,” said Brad Smith (top right), Vice Chair and President of Microsoft.

The move effectively embeds AI into the daily academic workflow of an entire generation, offering hands-on experience for the future workforce.

To support educators shaping that workforce, Microsoft is also launching two new tracks under its Elevate initiative. Elevate for Educators will offer free AI training, workshops and a global educator community to help teachers integrate AI responsibly into classrooms, while Elevate for Changemakers will equip nonprofit leaders with practical AI credentials and frameworks to strengthen digital capacity across the social sector. Together, the programmes aim to ensure that AI benefits are distributed widely, not concentrated among large enterprises.

“Baseline AI skills are increasingly becoming as fundamental as digital literacy. By equipping students with a hands on experience using AI tools, and supporting our educators to adopt them confidently, we are strengthening the foundations for Singapore’s future workforce, and training them to use AI with confidence, discernment and trust,” said Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment in Singapore.

The investment will fund expanded cloud and AI infrastructure, cybersecurity enhancements and ongoing operations through 2029. It builds on Singapore’s rapid AI adoption and comes as LinkedIn data shows demand for AI literacy skills in Singapore rising more than 70 percent year-on-year.
