Singtel has collaborated with Ericsson and Samsung to unveil the world’s first live implementation of app-based network slicing.
This cutting-edge technology lets app owners activate dedicated, customised slices of Singtel’s 5G network to turbocharge their applications and enhance performance.
5G network slicing enables multiple virtualised and independent logical networks on the same physical infrastructure. The sliced end-to-end networks are tailored to specific application requirements. While previous slicing technologies catered primarily to subscribers’ lines, this breakthrough takes it a step further by focusing on individual apps.
Singtel’s successful implementation was built on two key components — user equipment route selection policy (URSP) and applicationd detection control (ADC).
URSP dynamically switches between different network slices based on the specific app being used. For instance, a financial app might require a highly secure slice for sensitive data transactions, while a video meeting app demands low latency and high throughput.
ADC ensures seamless data delivery by channeling traffic through an optimal path between smart devices and Singtel’s 5G network. The result is efficient, reliable and smooth performance for users.
Singtel put its network slicing prowess to the test during the live streaming of the recent Australian Open using its CAST application. The trial demonstrated the potential of network slicing for various use cases, including workplace productivity, gaming, media streaming, and emerging technologies such as AI and augmented reality.
Samsung has configured URSP for its Galaxy S24 Ultra. It aims to harmonise device firmware and software, optimising user equipment behaviour for efficient network resource utilisation. The smartphone maker will roll this out to other devices so users can expect improved quality of service and a personalised experience across different network slices.
Singtel’s app-based network slicing opens up exciting possibilities, including smoother video calls, lightning-fast downloads, and glitch-free gaming.
“With these tailored 5G network slices, we’re unlocking a new pathway for app owners to deliver enhanced user experiences,” said Tay Yeow Lian, Managing Director of Networks at Singtel Singapore.
