Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched its first cloud infrastructure region in Thailand. The more than US$5 billion AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region brings state-of-the-art cloud computing capabilities to Thai businesses, government agencies and organisations.
With three Availability Zones, it offers enhanced resilience, security and low-latency access to a wide array of AWS services, including analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and Internet of Things (IoT).
The investment is expected to generate substantial economic benefits for Thailand. AWS projects that it will support more than 11,000 jobs annually in the local data centre supply chain and contribute about US$10 billion to Thailand’s GDP.
The ripple effect will extend beyond direct economic gains, fostering innovation, upskilling the workforce, and attracting further investments in the country’s tech sector.
Thai businesses across various industries are poised to leverage this new infrastructure to accelerate their digital transformation efforts. Siam Cement Group has already reported significant cost savings and improved efficiency after migrating its critical workloads to AWS. In the financial sector, companies such as 2C2P and Ascend Money are excited about the enhanced capabilities this local infrastructure will bring to their fintech solutions.
“I look forward to AWS playing a pivotal role, in partnership with the government, in advancing Thailand toward a more inclusive digital society and expanding access to digital services for all citizens,” said Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand.
AWS’s commitment extends beyond technological infrastructure. It has pledged to continue its efforts in sustainability, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and water positivity by 2030. AWS has also been actively involved in upskilling the Thai workforce, having trained over 50,000 individuals in cloud skills since 2017.
“This new AWS Region in Thailand will help customers across all industries deploy advanced applications with a broad set of AWS technologies that offer both core cloud capabilities, such as compute, storage, analytics, and networking, and services that enable customers to rapidly evolve, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. With today’s launch, AWS is proud to support Thailand’s digital transformation and help accelerate its role as a regional hub for artificial intelligence,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS.
