Vietnam’s maritime industry gets 5G boost

Singapore’s M1, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), and SSI Solutions have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement 5G technology in Vietnam Maritime Corporation’s (VIMC) operations.

The collaboration aims to leverage M1’s expertise in maritime 5G solutions, VNPT’s network infrastructure and SSI Solutions’ integration capabilities to enhance operational efficiency and digital transformation at VIMC’s ports.

Planned applications include tele-remote control of equipment, improved automated guided vehicle operations, and advanced surveillance systems.

“VNPT highly appreciate the strengths and experience of SSI and M1 in consulting and deploying 5G for vertical industries, especially the seaport industry, and hope that this cooperation would bring benefits to all parties and all would gain significant revenue from 5G technology,” said Nguyen Nam Long, Vice President of VNPT Group.

“We have spent the last few years co-creating and introducing viable 5G-enabled commercial solutions to digitise Singapore’s maritime operations and make Maritime 5G a reality. By sharing our expertise and experience from successful use cases, we are contributing to the modernisation of one of Southeast Asia’s most critical maritime hubs,” said Andrew Cheng, Chief of Enterprise Services at M1.

This initiative builds on M1’s extensive background in maritime 5G innovation. In late 2022, the telco embarked on a multi-year project to provide 5G standalone offshore coverage for Singapore’s southern coast and islands. Working with Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Infocomm Media Development Authority, it is developing new maritime 5G use cases as part of innovation testbed programmes.

M1’s maritime 5G portfolio also includes a partnership with Keppel Offshore & Marine, launched in 2021, to implement Southeast Asia’s first maritime 5G AR/VR smart glasses solution for remote ship repairs.
