Singapore’s National Institute of Education (NIE) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have teamed up to launch the Technology for Education Centre (TEC) to accelerate educational transformation in Singapore.
The three-year partnership aims to empower educators, students and researchers to co-create and test new educational technologies, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and digital competencies.
Located on the NIE campus, TEC is envisioned as a collaborative playground for innovation, where student teachers, faculty and AWS specialists can experiment with emerging technologies in real-world educational settings.
The innovation hub will feature dedicated prototyping zones, secure environments for testing digital tools and hands-on workshops to nurture a culture of experimentation and responsible technology adoption.
“This strategic partnership signifies a shared commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to transform education in Singapore. Together, we are transforming how teachers teach, how students learn, and how research
shapes real-world policy and practice,” said Professor Liu Woon Chia, Director of Director.
TEC’s mission is aligned with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, which seeks to build an AI-ready workforce and reinforce the nation’s reputation as a global hub for educational technology excellence.
Through initiatives such as the AWS Skill Builder platform, cloud-based simulations and generative AI tools like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q Developer, NIE staff and students will gain practical experience in designing, prototyping and deploying solutions to real-world challenges.
These efforts are complemented by student-led service-learning projects, hackathons, and forums that tackle key issues such as algorithmic bias, data privacy and the ethical use of AI in education.
The collaboration also covers support for applied research in AI, data analytics and the integration of digital tools into teaching and learning. By translating research into actionable classroom solutions and policy insights, the partnership hopes to bridge the gap between educational theory and practice to improve learner outcomes and shaping educational policy.
“Educators shape our future workforce. By combining the NIE’s expertise with AWS’s AI technologies in experiential learning, we’re supporting Singapore’s Smart Nation vision to develop digitally-empowered teachers ready to address tomorrow’s challenges with confidence and digital fluency,” said Elsie Tan, Singapore Country Manager of Worldwide Public Sector at AWS.
This latest initiative builds upon a broader trend of cross-sector collaborations in Singapore’s education landscape. In recent years, AWS has partnered with six institutes of higher learning — including all five national polytechnics and a private education institution — to integrate cloud computing and AI courses into diploma programmes to prepare students for in-demand technology careers.
