FairPrice Group opens world’s first GenAI-powered supermarket in Punggol

FairPrice Group (FPG) has opened the world’s first generative AI-powered supermarket at Punggol Digital District (PDD).

The flagship Store of Tomorrow integrates advanced AI solutions throughout the customer journey and store operations to make shopping more intuitive.

FPG has deployed Google Cloud’s Agent Development Kit and open standards such as the Model Context Protocol to launch a suite of agentic AI assistants. Available to shoppers at FairPrice Finest PDD, these assistants deliver hyperpersonalised recommendations, seamless hybrid virtual-physical endless aisles and automated discount applications.

“FairPrice Finest PDD is the first major step on a multi-year journey to make things even easier on the experience and wallet for our customers, by reimagining what retail means for all in Singapore,” said Vipul Chawla, Group CEO of FairPrice Group.

“FPG’s use of these technologies — extending from the storefront to the back office — is an incredible example of how AI is driving innovation across every customer touchpoint and corner of the enterprise,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.

The new store features the conversational Smart Cart, which leverages multimodal AI to provide in-store navigation, real-time product recommendations, and personalised assistance as shoppers move through the aisles.

Smart Cart taps into knowledge agents capable of understanding nuanced local dialects and complex product queries to offer suggestions, recipes and ingredient pairings alongside instant product availability information. This enhanced shopping journey will continue to roll out at other FairPrice locations, including Thomson Plaza later in 2025.

FairPrice’s Unity pharmacy in the new Finest outlet showcases a GenAI-powered wellness assistant that uses body composition analysis and personal health goals to craft tailored nutrition, lifestyle advice and shopping lists for consumers.

The digital wine sommelier, accessed by NFC-enabled shelf labels, assists shoppers in picking wines suited to their taste and occasion, providing food pairings and tasting notes drawn from a rich database of global wines.

For FairPrice staff, the Store of Tomorrow programme introduces AI tools such as advanced CCTV analytics for smoother store operations, Grocer Genie app-based task assignment, and an agentic intranet via Google Agentspace for enterprise-level search, task automation, and creative asset generation.

A custom creative agent has slashed the time needed to create promotional campaigns by up to 100 times.

FPG’s Store of Tomorrow has redefined the retail experience for shoppers and Singapore as a leading smart nation.
