AMD and OpenAI have signed an agreement for OpenAI to deploy six gigawatts (GW) of AMD Instinct GPUs, starting with an initial 1GW rollout in the second half of 2026 powered by the forthcoming MI450 series chips.
One of the largest AI infrastructure buildouts globally, the deal is expected to generate tens of billions in annual revenue for AMD and involves OpenAI receiving warrants for up to 160 million AMD common shares as performance milestones are hit.
The deepening relationship positions AMD as a crucial compute partner for OpenAI’s next-gen models and is set to accelerate AMD’s hardware and ecosystem narrative at a time when generative AI infrastructure demand is surging.

Hot on the heels
The AMD-OpenAI news comes just days after AMD secured a major alliance with IBM to partner Zyphra to build advanced AI infrastructure for frontier multi-modal model development on IBM Cloud.
OpenAI also has a similar high-profile agreement with NVIDIA, in which NVIDIA will progressively invest up to US$100 billion as OpenAI deploys at least 10GW of NVIDIA systems for its next-generation AI infrastructure starting in the second half of 2026.
Significance of AMD’s Move
The OpenAI deal cements AMD’s status as a viable, large-scale AI compute provider to counter NVIDIA’s near-monopoly in the AI chip space. AMD’s recent tie-up with IBM anchors its push into cloud and quantum-centric AI applications to further establish momentum in vertical integration and hybrid AI deployment options.
By working cooperatively yet competitively with the two of the largest foundational model creators — OpenAI and IBM — AMD has inched itself into the core of next-gen AI infrastructure.
