Equinix pledges S$9m to accelerate Singapore’s clean energy transition

Equinix has committed more than S$9 million through 2028 to accelerate Singapore’s clean energy transition in alignment with the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and the nation’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The first of its kind programme brings together industry and academia to explore scalable, low-carbon energy options critical to Singapore’s sustainable future.

Singapore currently derives most of its power from natural gas, but aims to diversify its energy mix by importing up to 4GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035 while investigating new technologies such as hydrogen, geothermal energy and carbon capture.

Equinix’s initiative directly supports these national priorities by advancing energy research, policy development and infrastructure innovation.

“The clean energy transition is more than a climate imperative — it’s the engine of our digital and AI-driven economy. By backing frontier research and innovative projects, we’re strengthening the foundation for sustainable infrastructure and empowering knowledge partnerships that will drive Singapore’s clean energy leadership,” said Yee May Leong, Managing Director of Singapore at Equinix.

This programme will provide grants to five organisations — Asia Clean Energy Coalition, Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources, International Tracking Standard Foundation, Nanyang Technological University, and National University of Singapore Energy Studies Institute.

Their projects will focus on developing frameworks for renewable electricity imports, evaluating nuclear and hydrogen potential, standardising clean energy tracking, and studying geothermal energy for data centre cooling.
