Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and HTX (Home Team Science and Technology Agency) are deploying Singtel’s network slicing technology to fortify their security capabilities and combat evolving threats.
Network slicing is a feature of 5G technology that allows for the creation of multiple virtual networks within a single physical network infrastructure. It’s like having several separate highways on the same road, each dedicated to different types of vehicles or purposes.
This technology enables DSTA and HTX to have dedicated network resources that provide them with reliable high-speed connectivity, low latency and guaranteed bandwidth.
These dedicated “slices” of the network ensure that critical security operations have priority access to 5G capabilities, even during times of high network congestion.
The security agencies will be able to improve situational awareness and response times, enhance command and control operations, detect threats more swiftly, and respond to incidents rapidly.
By leveraging this technology, DSTA and HTX can now take advantage of cutting-edge tools such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The high-speed, low-latency connections will also enable the secure and rapid analysis of large volumes of data, allowing first responders to make better-informed decisions and act quickly in critical situations.
“DSTA is constantly exploring and harnessing new technologies to strengthen Singapore’s defence capabilities. The high bandwidth, low latency characteristics and network slicing capability of 5G holds great potential for use in defence applications, enhancing operational flexibility, effectiveness
and efficiency,” said Wong Chia Sern, Director Infocomm Infrastructure of DSTA.
“As the usage for 5G in Singapore increases, it is imperative that we have a
dedicated capacity that ensures Home Team operations are not affected even during scenarios where a surge in the number of network connections slows down data transmission speeds for normal users,” said Vincent Ho, Director of Enterprise Comms & Digital Infra at HTX.
