Viettel has turned to Ciena to enhance its optical network capacity.
Vietnam’s leading telecom operator will deploy Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform powered by its WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) 800G coherent optics on its backbone network to support high-capacity 600 Gb/s wavelengths over distances beyond 1,000 km.
The enhancement increases the backbone capacity more than sixfold, from 4 Tb/s to 25.2 Tb/s for significantly faster connectivity with improved space and power efficiency.
Deployed by Elcom, the network modernisation also leverages Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite for automated operations to simplify lifecycle management amid rising demand fuelled by cloud computing, AI applications and international traffic growth.
In a recent milestone trial, Viettel demonstrated the potential of Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology and achieved 1.6 Tb/s through a single optical channel — doubling capacity from 800 Gb/s and positioning elite WL6e solutions as a future-ready upgrade to offer ultra-high speed 800GbE connectivity.
“Optical backbones are critical to Vietnam’s fast-growing digital economy. Together with Viettel, Ciena is helping build the connectivity foundation essential to help Vietnam maintain its pace of growth in the AI era, all while optimising carbon footprint, power and capacity,” said Wendy Le, Country Lead of Vietnam for Ciena.
