SoftBank plans to modernise and expand its 4G and 5G network infrastructure across Western Japan using Nokia’s telecommunications technologies.
The modernisation efforts will focus on delivering ultra-high performance and capacity while boosting energy efficiency.
“This enhanced partnership with Nokia helps us to build a unique and high-quality 5G network powered by AI. The upgraded network will improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and deliver a superior user experience to our customers,” said Hideyuki Tsukuda, Executive Vice President and CTO of SoftBank.
With Nokia’s technology, SoftBank aims to extend 5G standalone coverage and improve network management through new AI-powered capabilities.
It will adopt Nokia’s AirScale portfolio, including advanced radio access equipment, massive MIMO radios powered by ReefShark system-on-chip technology, and the AI-enhanced MantaRay self-organising network solution.
“This expanded collaboration with SoftBank demonstrates the strength of our long-standing partnership. Our solutions are infused with AI capabilities and provide unparalleled performance with industry-leading energy efficiency, supporting the evolution toward Advanced-5G networks,” said Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia.
As founding members of the AI-RAN Alliance, Nokia and SoftBank are jointly exploring AI-driven RAN (radio access network) innovations as well as 6G advancements, which include field trials with massive MIMO technology in the 7 GHz band in Tokyo.
