Review: OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G

By Inez Lim

New to the market, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G was introduced on August 19. We’re excited and thankful to have gotten a hold of the latest OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G before its release.

We’ll walk through some features of the phone which we particularly enjoyed when using it. We took it on a trip with us to Sydney and boy did we love the quality of the photos and videos taken from this phone!

Before we talk about the main features, here are some of the ‘hard facts’ about the phone that may interest you.

Design –Dimensions: 161.2 x 74.2 x 7.34 (mm); Weight: 183 g; Colour options: Glazed green; Glazed black (We reviewed the Glazed black model);

Screen – Size: 6.7 inches; Resolution: FHD; Technology: AMOLED; Refresh rate: 120 Hz (max)

Storage – RAM: 8 GB/12 GB; Storage: 256 GB

Cameras – Rear: 50MP main camera with SONY IMX766 sensor, 8MP wide-angle camera and 2MP macro camera; Front: 32MP front camera with SONY IMX709 RGBW sensor

As compared to the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G comes with a refreshed look. The phone’s edges are still sleek and squarish, but the rear design has been streamlined to feature a single section containing the cameras and sensors.

Now for the features that I love:

The Cameras

The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G features an AutoFocus Smart Selfie feature that automatically adjusts for natural portraits. It also zooms accordingly to group size (attempting to fit everyone in). Colours from the images also give a very natural feel. For those that enjoy using subtle natural filters to smoothen the facial tones and all, the camera also allows you to do so.

Shooting videos is also made easy as the SoC works in tandem with the MariSilicon X. I appreciate this camera because it enhances the videoing experience with the AI highlight for enhanced colour, and the ultra-steady feature (only 1080P).

Images shot at night are also distinct, with the AI highlight enhancing the images.

Air Gestures

YouTube video control via hand gestures. When playing videos via the YouTube application, I was able to pause/play videos based on when I raised my palm towards the front camera. A pretty neat feature, especially if you’re into baking and follow online YouTube recipes! You won’t have to touch your screen when your hand’s dirty.

Other air gestures are also available for scrolling up and down through applications and when answering or muting calls.

Video Watching

As one who enjoys binge-watching videos, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G is an amazing phone to binge-watch videos on! The OPPO O1 ultra vision engine gives videos a colour boost (through intelligently identifying common scenes in videos and adjusting clarity and colour) as well as video image sharpening (able to upscale video resolutions).

Such features enhances the viewing experience – especially for lower quality videos!

Thoughts

I enjoyed trying out the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G phone. Its lightweight body (mere 183g!), ultra-slim design and sleek look makes it an ideal phone to carry around.

The battery life of this phone is surprisingly lasting as well. A simple charge (fast charger) charges the phone to about 50% in 12 minutes (officially 11 minutes). Based on the review materials, the phone is supposed to be able to last 1,600 charge-discharge cycles which is equivalent to about 4 years of usage. Also, OPPO included the fast charger (and cable) in the phone box – a plus!

I love the photos and videos that came out of this phone. The ability to take such photos and videos with a single device makes it an enticing phone to get.

If only this was flat..

But if there’s one thing that I may pick out (common to many phones in the market), I’d definitely hope that future phones can be laid flat down. I understand that the cameras need space and will protrude but.. I love phones that can rest on the table.. flat. Nothing major though!
